Easy Puff Pastry Recipes for New Year’s at Home

Hi and hello, this is my last e-mail of 2025!

Today I’m thinking about pickies (and puff pastry). Pickies is what my grandmother used to call snacks served at a get together. She always wanted to make sure we had enough pickies, and I take that energy with me into every situation. Whether you’re hosting or just sitting around grazing your way into the new year, it's essential to have ALL of the pickies. And since it’s the stretch between major holidays, when most people are tired and not looking to spend much time in the kitchen, puff pastry really earns its place.

Here are some of my favorite puff pastry recipes (both sweet and savory) worthy of a celebration.

Caramelized Onion Tarts

These mini tarts are a winning combination of sweet, jammy onions and salty, briny feta...what’s not to love?

Cinnamon Twists

Cinnamon and brown sugar get twisted up in puff pastry and baked to make a simple, yet outrageously good snack or dessert.

Cream Cheese and Pepper Jelly Bites

My husband and I are obsessed with pepper jelly anything--that combination of sweet and spicy, combined with the creaminess from the cream cheese and the flakiness of the pastry makes it the perfect little bite to eat.

Brie and Jam Bites

Like a brie en croute, but in mini form.

Puff Pastry Cinnamon Rolls

Using puff pastry (and skipping the yeasted dough situation) results in an ultra-buttery and flaky cinnamon roll, with a swirl of cinnamon sugar and a simple cream cheese glaze as a finishing touch. Different than traditional, but so simple to make!

Easy Apple Tart

I thought about sharing my Apple Tarte Tatin recipe, a celebration-worthy classic pastry that does use puff pastry, but it is a little bit more finicky then this collection of recipes. So instead, I'm sharing this easy Apple Tart, with similar flavors but a laid back approach to making it.

Goat Cheese and Fig Bites

Goat cheese + caramelized onions and a (store-bought) fig jam nestled into puff pastry!

Cheddar and Parm Cheese Straws

Aged cheddar and Parmesan cheeses are twisted up playfully in puff pastry and then baked for a flaky, crunchy texture and a subtle kick of heat from (optional) cayenne.

And with that, I want to wish you a VERY happy New Year. May it bring to you what matters most.

(In case you are thinking about your intentions for next year I love the “more of” and “less of” approach when I’m setting intentions, and I created a template I use and thought you might like too. You can download it, fill it out as a PDF, or print it. I hang mine in my office and look at it every day.)

And I'll see you on the other side in 2026!

Kelli Avila January 23, 2026 Hi friends, Every year around this time I ask my Instagram community what feels hardest about making pies, and the answers are almost always the same: pie crust! "How much water do I need to add?" "Why does my crust fall apart?" "Why is my crust tough?" "I'm afraid of making it!" If pie crust has ever made you doubt yourself, you’re in good company. But you can get better at this because despite it's reputation, making pie crust by hand is surprisingly simple to...
