What to Make During Strawberry Season

Today we’re celebrating the arrival of strawberry season! Three cheers for that!

Even though we live in a time when strawberries are available year round, there’s still something so special about the local crop coming in spring. It’s the anticipation...how much sweeter and more deeply flavored they are, and of course all the fun of planning what to make with them.

I’ll admit, most of the strawberries that come into our house this time of year are eaten as is. But when I find myself with more than we can use up in a few days time, I tuck some away in the freezer to use later for baking. It allows me to stretch the joy that is strawberry season just a bit longer!

Strawberry Rhubarb Pie

A classic spring pie. The combination of tart, almost floral rhubarb with sweet strawberries creates an entirely new flavor, which is what makes it one of the best pies of the season.

Fresh Strawberry Cream Pie

This pie is made with exactly what you think it should be: fresh strawberries and cream. It's similar to this Fresh Strawberry Pie, but a bit more elaborate both in taste and execution. Fresh strawberries are puréed and incorporated into a really delicious no-bake filling that is similar to panna cotta.

An easy no-bake treat, this cake is made up of layers of graham crackers, mascarpone strawberry cream, sweet orange-scented ricotta cream and a delicious strawberry pie filling.

Buttermilk Strawberry Muffins

This recipe comes from my other website, Everyday Family Eats, and like the other muffin recipes there, it makes a perfect breakfast muffin. The buttermilk adds a wonderful tang to accompany the sweet strawberries (and helps tenderize the muffin, too). The muffins calls for both fresh and freeze-dried strawberries (more on that below) to pack a lot of strawberry flavor.

Strawberry Cobbler

This rustic and homey dessert is an hidden gem on my website. It features a buttery, biscuit-like cake baked up together with juicy strawberries to make for the perfect summer dessert. The cobbler is assembled in layers in the dish that then transform in the oven. It's like a cross between a cake, a dutch baby, and a pie and it's just so delicious.

Strawberry Ice Cream

There is no comparing the taste of homemade Strawberry Ice Cream to anything store-bought. This recipe took so many quarts of strawberries over the course of several weeks to develop two years back, but it was all worth it because this resulting recipe is perfect, and everything I'd hoped for.
